AMERICAN NATIONAL'' SINGLES. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, NEW YORK, September 9. Following are the results of the first round of the National Lawn Tennis Singles at Philadelphia, in which tho Australians competed; Ingram (Boston) defeated N. Peach (Australia), 6-5, 6-1, 6-4. G. V. Todd (Australia) defeated Grosbeak, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. J. B. llawkes (Australia) defeated Rosenbaum, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. J. C. Anderson (Australia) defeated Rice, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. —Second Round.— Willis Davis (America) defeated Todd, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Hawkcs defeated Le Rov (Canada), 6-1, 6- 6-3. Anderson defeated Symington, 6-1, 6-1, 7ST. ANDREW’S OPENING. The first club to open the lawn tennis season was St. Andrew’s, tho function taking place on Saturday afternoon in splendid weather. Messrs J. H. Meek and B. B. Coneton represented tho Lawn Tennis Association. The Rev. Hector Maclean, in declaring tho courts open, drew attention to the improvements which had been made in the three courts, and expressed the hope that the club would have an enjoyable and successful season. He laid particular stress on the social side of the club, emphasising its importance, and intimated that he had received a silver cup to be presented to tho champion lady. Mr Meek (president of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association) congratulated the club on its courts and on the attendance and enthusiasm displayed at the opening. Ho mentioned that &t. Andrew’s was one of the younger clubs that had been very helpful to tho association. General play continued till dark.
