AMATEUR ATHLETICS

OTAGO CENTRE OFFICIALS. Mr E. A. Rosevear presided at a meeting last night of the Otago Centre of the K.Z.A.A.A. A motion was carried on the casting vote of tho chairman—“ That the permanent officials appointed by the Otago Centro be eligible to attend all centre meetings and have a full voting power thereon.”

Mr Melville stated that the chairman’s actiori was contrary to usual parliamentary procedure, it being usual for a chairman to give his deciding vote against a motion involving change ot the status quo. Later in the evening Mr Melville said that it was a very serious matter, and as the motion was carried it would mean that as the centre was supposed to be composed of delegates and a president and vicepresident, their powers would be nullified to a certain extent.- He then moved, and l Mr J. H. List seconded, that the secretary be instructed to write ,to the New Zealand Council asking whether tho motion carried was in order.

The Secretary then inquired whether there was a rule which empowered the centre to appoint a president and a vicepresident, and, if so, should they be entitled to vote. If the strict law was enforced tho president and vice-president would not he entitled to vote. There were no rules in the N.Z.A.A.A. which laid it down that the centre could not appoint Its own officials.—The motion was lost.

Tho Secretary reported having received advice to the effect that the South African athletes were due to arrive in Dunedin on January 21 or 28 of next year. .The team comprised two sprinters, a middle and a 'distance runner, and two field event athlete®. The Otago Centre approved of its deleg des’ action in accepting affiliation to tho unedin Sports Ground -Society, The application of Mr P. B. Harper for reinstatement as an amateur was apMessrs E. H. Bezett and C. Marshall (St. Hilda Harriers’ Club),' W. Matson and C. King (Port Chalmers Athletic Club), and G. Championship Committee reported that all arrangements were well in hand for the Otago five-mile cross-country championship, to be held at Wingatui on J ; .£j 30. Messrs E. A. Rosevear, J. H. List, R.
