(Received July 11, at 10.15 a.m.) The Opihi encountered the full force of the recent cyclonic storm when bound from New Zealand to Melbourne with timber. The vessel was taken to sea to evade tho storm, but mountainous seas swept her from stem to stern for two days, when the wind shifted, tho sea striking the vessel from three directions. STATE EDUCATION. PERTH, July 11. (Received July 11, at 10.55 a.m.) Sir Edward Wiltenoora, a member of tho Legislative Council, giving evidence before the Royal Commission on Education, after a visit to Sydney, stated that the expensive educational efforts in New South Wales, judging by Parliament and by tho larrikinism and disloyalty prevalent, had been a failure. Ho advocated the State restricting its activities to practical elementary education only. COASTAL SHIPPING TRADE. MELBOURNE. July 11. (Received July 11, at 10.55 a.m.) Mr Mossy Greene, Federal Minister of Customs, informed a deputation representing Tasmanian shipping circles that under the Commonwealth Constitution the Government had no power to exempt any State from tho provisoins of any Act. He understood that the Union Company was withdrawing its vessels from the- Tasmanian trip not in consequence of tho Navigation Act, but because of insufficient traffic during tho winter months. Ho would issue permission to overseas vessels to trade to Tasmania during the apple season if tho coastal companies’ service was inadequate.
