The Kakapo arrived at Greymouth at 7 a.m. to-day from Napier. She is expected to sail to-night for Lyttelton The Kokiri arrived at Timaru at 3 p.m. yesterday from Westport. She is to sail tomorrow for Oamaru to complete discharge. The Union Company's barque Cladbrook arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon from Newcastle with a cargo of coal. The passage occupied seventeen days. The White Star liner Persic sailed from London on February 11 for Australian porie. The steamer Horonui is to leave Now York on March 10 for Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, Newcastle, and Brisbane. The Canadian Government liner Canadian Highlander, after a fast trip from Vancouver, arrived at Sydney on February 14. Tiio steamer carries a, largo general cargo, including a quantity of lumber, for Sydney, Melbourne, and New Zealand. The next steamer of the Osaki Shoscn Kaisha Lino to reach Melbourne from Japan will ho the Madras Ms.ru, due today with a cargo of assorted goods. This steamer will be followed by the Seflmi M«ru, duo at Moibourne a month later. The Aberdeen liner Domo-sthenes left Southampton on February 19 for Australia, with passengers and general lines. She is duo at Melbourne about March 22. The Trewellard is now expected to have the discharge of her 7,000 tons of coal completed at Lyttelton on Wednesday* when she will bo despatched for Newcastle. The Capo Premier, which arrived at Auckland on February 20 from Durban with a cargo of coal, war. recently pur- ; chased by the Adelaide Steamship Company, and will bo handed over to her new owners on arrival at Sydney. Two cargoes of coal for the Railway Department are duo at Wellington on March 4 and 10 respectively by the steamers Trodonham and Anstralind from Hampton Roads, U.S.A. PASSENGERS FROM LIVERPOOL. The Federal steamer Shropshire sailed from Liverpool on February 25 for Wellington via Panama Canal. Tho vessel will disembark passengers at Wellington, where she is due about April 7. Built fifty years ago on the Manning River. New South Wales, the brigantine Rachel Cohen is being refitted at the Melbourne Steamship Company’s shipyards, WiTliarastown, for the guano deposit trade with Browse Island, on the nort-west const of Western Australia. The Rachel Cohen is an old Tasmanian trader, and was recently purchased by the Browse Island Company. STEAMER’S NARROW ESCAPE. The new Commonwealth Government steamer Erriba narrowly escaped disaster in the Tarra River early this month, Tim steamer, which is the second of the “ E class of Commonwealth vessels to be built, in Victoria, was branched at. Williamstown on December 10. At the time of tho accident. site was moored in the river row the j big crane, for her propellers and funnel | to he placed in position. When a spare, j 1 propeller, weighing eight tons, was being ; lifted from the wharf into the shin's hold, I a high wind caused it to revolve like a vrindmill. In its fall the propeller went perilously close to the ship’s side, and, crashing on to the top of a new boiler, rebounded to the wharf. Had it. dropped when the sHng j was over the hold it would have fallen a di.rtar.ee of 40ft. and would probably have crashed through the bottom of the ship. The boiler, which was awaiting the arrival of another vessel, was badly damaged, and a portion of the wharf was smashed. FALCON A FROM MELBOURNE. The Union Company’s Interstate steamer Paloona arrived at Dunedin at 7 a.m. vesterdav from Melbourne via Bluff. She was berthed at the Victoria wliarf, and will remain idle until the waterfront dispute has been settled. The vessel has over 1,000 tons of general cargo under hatches, which includes transhipments ex the steamers Tisnarin, City of Edinburgh, and Australpool. OUTGOING SAN FRANCISCO MAIL. The mail steamer Manama arrived at Wellington at 5 p.m. yesterday from Sydney with mails and a Largo number of passengers. She is listed to loavo the northern port to-morrow afternoon for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete. THE HUDSON MARTI. Tho steamer Hudson Maru left Newcastle on Saturday for Dunedin.
