Representatives of the young people’s societies connected with the Presbyterian congregations of First Church, St. Andrew’s. North-east Valley, and South Du new. held their annual Christmas concert and social in the social hall of the Benevolent Home, Caversham, on Tuesday evening. The room was crowded with the inmates of the institution. The- Rev. R. Fairmaid, who presided, was supported by Miss M’Neill, of Glentiining Home. The proceedings opened with the National Anthem. A programme of varied and popular. items was excellently rendered by the visiting young people, and was much enjoyed by the audience, in almost every case encores being demanded. The following contributed:—Misses Lily'Stevens, Porteous, Dawson, Lyon, Miller (3), Minnie Maret, and Lilian Steals, and Masters Andrew Baird, Jack Stevens, Bertie Steals, and Cyril Maret. The accompaniments were played by Mrs M'Callum, bliss Dick, and Nurse M'Kinnon. Mr Porteous, the manager of the institution, who was regrettably absent through indisposition, sent his greetings and cordial thanks to those who had provided so delightful an evening for the folks under his care. A service of tea and cakes and a verse of * Auld Lang Syne ’ concluded a most enjoyable function. Son; “Who was Noah’s wife, dad?” Father: “ Joan of Arc, my boy. Now run away.”
