-A Presentation was made at the Otago Daily Times’ Office yesterday to Dir B. Provo (the well-known Maori War veteran), .who is retiring after forty-four years’ service for the 1 Times ’ in the jobbing room. Sir George Fenwick made the preseutatioti, which consisted of a Morris armchanr, a wallet, and a fountain pen. Mr R. de R. Worker, assistant-master at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, left by the Moeraki for Sydney on Friday. Mr Worker is a representative of the combined New Zealand teachers’ cricket teams which are to play a set of matches in Australia.

Mr J. H. B. Coates, formerly general manager of the Bank of New Zealand is at present on a visit to Auckland. Mr Charles Francis, one of tho bestknown of American printers, is making a world tour to inquire into labor conditions, he having been appointed a soecial representative of the United States Department of Labor for the purpose. He left New York at the beginning of August, and his itinerary includes New Zealand and Australia, in which latter country he commenced his career as a printer. ‘ Mr Francis is to deliver several lectures on matters of interest and Importance in the industry, and carries with him moving picture; equipment with which to illust' trate his talks. , M. Levy, of the Wellington ‘ Timeslterary staff, has been awarded first prize in the Christchurch ‘ Sim ’ Christmas short story competition among ■a. large number of competitors. In the ‘Sun’s’ competition last Christmas Mr Levy won the second prize (bracketed) against fix tv odd competitors. The employees o'f Messrs Farra Bros, made a presentation on Tuesday to Mr Robert White on the occasion-of his approaching marriage. Mr White’ enlisted with the Main Body, saw service at Samoa and afterwards in France, returning after the armistice was declared. In making the presentation, Mr D. B. Smith (the foreman) expressed the hearty good wishes of his shopmaies, and asked him to accept a clock, occasional Gable, and a set of jugs as an expression of their esteem. The firm also presented Mr White with a cheque and a number of useful articles to assist him in his furnishing. The personnel of the Royal Commission to deal with tire boundaries of the Greymonth Harbor district is : Mr D. Thomson (ex-Piiblic Service Commissioner), Mr W. Shovtt (ex-Under-Secretary for Public Works), Mr R. S. Galbraith (Commissioner of .Crown Lands, Westland). The proposal to establish a memorial to the late Mr John Bollard, who for eighteen years represented Eden in the House of Representatives, is being enthusiastically supported at Avondale. It is proposed that the form of the memorial should be scholarships in perpetuity for pupils from tho Avondale school district, and the sum aimed at is £SOO.

Mr .1. F. Arnold, a former member for Dunedin Central, and at present Inspector of Factories at Timaru, is on a short visit to this city. Sir George Fenwick went to-day to Timaru for a short stay, • Hr G. L. Denniston was a passenger to-day from Dunedin to Temuha. Sir Thomas and Lady Mackenzie have : gone_ to Auckland, with Miss Mary Mackenzie, to spend Christinas with Dr Kenneth Mackenzie. Mrs Ellis and Mrs Macdonald are with the party.
