FARMER’S UNION

SELLING STOCK BY WEIGHT. At a meeting yesterday •of the Otago Provincial Council of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, a letter was received from the Dunedin _ Saleyards Company stating that it was impossible to with the desire of the Tapanui branch in regard to installing a weighbridge at Burnside with the object of selling stock by weight. The matter had been considered very fully by the company, and it would mean a very heavy expenditure on its part, and pz-obably involve a complete rearrangement of all the cattleyards, in addition to the cost of the weighbridge itself. So many different interests would be affected by the carrying out of the suggestion made that it seemed there should be some steps taken at a conference of all the parties interested before a definite decision could be come to. The Chairman (Mr J. A. Macphersonl expressed the opinion that a remit should be sent forward to the next Dominion conference recommending the Governmnt to establish the sale of cattle, at anyrate at the four chief centres, by weight. The time had arrived when up-to-date methods should be followed, bringing the Dominion into line with Australia, America, and the Continent. It was resolved that the Government be asked to consider the question of granting assistance to the authorities in the four centres, and make it compulsory that the sale of cattle and sheep be by weight.
