CARTER THE GREAT
In order to court public favor with any dem-e of success the modern man of magic has to ho something far ahead of the hat and handkerchief genius with which our childhood was content. He must be constantly alert for now ideas to contend against the shoals of inferior plagiarists that,_ sharklike., appropriate the "product of his brain. His paraphernalia nowadays fills several baggage cars, and lie is obliged to employ an army of skilled assistants. The public are not to be satisfied with rabbits alone in these clays of progressive intelligence. They require'their rabbits trimmed ; the trimmings have to be pretty elaborate, too. It is in the recognition of all this, and in the endeavor to meet—nay, anticipate—the need of the age, _ that Garter the Great, magician and illusionist, who opens at His Majesty’s Theatre next Tuesday evening, under the direction of J. C. Williamson, Ltd,, has steadily climbtd to the topmost branch of the tree of his profession. The programme which he will present embodies all that is latest in the magician’s art. Carter travelled over 5,000 miles in the interior of India, and spent five months in Benares, on the hanks of the sacred Ganges, studying the occult with the native fakirs and mahatmas, and as a result brings with him a series of the most perplexing, confounding, and surprising marvels hitherto undreamt of in magic science. Evelyn Maxwell, described as the psychic marvel, gives, in conjunction with Carter, an extrordinary demonstration of thought transference and mental telepathy, and in one of the biggest illusions. ‘ The Lion’s Bride.’ a beautiful fullgrown Nubian lion (“Baby”) plays a prominent part. The stage settings,' costuming, and properties are said to be gorgeous, particularly the Eastern fostumes," apd a specially-selected orchestra provide the incidental music.
The box plans for tho Dunedin season of six nights and .throe matinees open at The Bristol to-morrow morning.
