SCOTLAND’S WAR MEMORIAL

EDINBURGH CASTLE AS HALL OP VALOR. Speaking in Edinburgh, the Duchess of Atholl outlined the history of the Scottish National War Memorial scheme, which, she said, the Duke of Atholl had very much at heart. It was proposed to erect the memorial in Edinburgh Castle, and in connection with the proposal to adapt one of the castle buildings for the purpose mf ft Hail of Valor, in which, for example, the names of all Scottish V.C.s might be inscribed. Site suggested that this might also provide a suitable place to commemorate some names which one- would like to see commemorated. It seemed strange that there was no memorial of the remarkable Scotsman and soldier, Claverho'tic. The more definite purpose of this hall would be to contain books of vellum on which would be inscribed the names of all the men and women who had given their lives in tho war. The cost of the scheme was estimated at £250,000. That was a very large sum, but it should not be impossible to raise it. It worked out at lOd per head of the Scottish people. The scheme, she thought, would appeal not only to every man and woman in Scotland, but also to those many thousands of Scots abroad, ilr Munro (Secretary for Scotland) wrote of the proposal:—“lf any site is marked out by Nature and history for the dedication of a shrine in commemoration of men and women of Scottish connection who died for King and country, it ie surely the beautiful capital of Scotland, and in that capital the castle, whose rock, beyond any other of the nation’s sacred places, may claim to symbolise the nation’s souk” (Applause.)
