James Knowles was mulcted in j the sum m 20s or 48 hours, i Mischief and Assault.—Frank Westerly ! was charged with committing mischief by f breaking a pane of glass valued at 30s, j the property of Hannah Bace. He was j also charged with assaulting Alfred Tyrie. ; He gleaded guilty. The sub-inspector said tliat accused and three companions 'called at the 1 Farmers' Hotel. . Four driiiks were supplied and accused tendered Is in payment. Mrs Race remonstrated with him, whereupon he broke a pane of. glass with his-elbow. A piece of the glass struck Mrs Race on the neck, and inflicted a cut. AccuseH was followed by the licensee's sop. and Mr Tyrie to hi,s boarding-house, where he assaulted the last-named by striking him on the face. Accused was ordered to pay the damage done and witnesses' expenses, in default 14 days' imprisonment on the first charge, and £2 or a like alternative on the second. Three charges.—Arthur Maekie was charged with drunkenness, with resisting Constable Frew, and also with committing mischief by damaging a mackintosh coalto the extent of £l. He pleaded guilty. The sub-inspector said that accused was arrested by the constable, who was in plain clothes, on a charge of drunkenness. Ho resisted violently, and in the struggle the pocket of his coat was torn. By-law Case.—Donald M'Coll. who to fined a few weeks ago on a charge of driving a vehicle without a light, applied for a rehearing of the case. Mr Calvert appeared in support, and the Sub-inspector to oppose.—The application was granted. Remanded.—William John Newman was charged with stealing a whisky decanter and contents, valued'at £2, the property of David Young. There was a second charge of assault and robbery against the accused.—Chief-Detective Bishop asked for a remand till Friday, stating that two other men had been arrested at Clyde in connection with the second charge Remanded accordingly. Theft of. Coal.—George Bennett pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of coal, valued at 4s, the property of theKaikorai Tramway Company.—The Chief Detective said accused was carting coal for Mr Ramsay, and on going up Marlaggan street met another carter named Harness. The latter asked accused to take two bags of coal from his load, as ho had too much on to take over the hill. Accused refused, but, a man named Baber coming along, the two bags were sold to him for 2s a bag. This happened on January 26, the j delay in bringing the charge being caused j through efforts to trace the man Harness. The chief detpctive added that Bennett had hitherto borne a good character. He was tho"father of 13 children, whose ages : ranired from 17 to two years.—The Magistrate said that in view of the chief detective's (statement he would deal leniently , with accused, who would 1 be convicted j and ordered to come up for sentence if I called upon within 12 months. He would also be ordered to pay 2s forthwith. Maintenance.—Leslie Thomns Fraser (Mr Irwin) was charged with failure to adequatelv maintain his'wife, for whom Mr G, J. "L. White appeared.—Defendant admitted the order and arrears (£8 ss), but pleaded inability 'to pay.—After hearing defendant the Magistrate sentenced him to one month's imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so lone as payment- was made at the rate of 20s per week—lss on the order and 5s off the arrears.
