A FLEET OF 50 STEAMERS. Canada, like her Australian sister, has a Government steamship line. The Australian company is known as the Commonwealth Line, while that of Canada boasts the proud title of the Canadian Government Merchant Marine. Mr Ross. Canadian Government Trade Commissioner in Australia, had something to say recently regarding the activities of this State enterprise. » In his words the Government had embarked upon si " formidable shipbuilding programme." Already about 50 cargo steamers had been built or contracted for. A few days before Mr Ko S3 left Vancouver the Government had placed an order for three additional steamers of over 8.000 tons register to be built in Vancouver yards, and further contracts by other yards were anticipated. One. steamer carrying a cargo of over 2.000,000 feet of B.a Douglas fit (Oregon) would leave Vancouver for Melbourne this month, while another steamer of over 8.000 tons register would be sailing shortly'for Melbourne and Sydney with timber, paper, and general cargo. So far the Canadian Government Merchant Marine had paid handsomely. It whs the policy of the. Government 'to endeavor to open up new trading routes rather than to compete with those already established. " Some of the steamers under construction in. Canada," said Mr Ross, "have a capacity of over 10.500 tons, and others are contemplated with a. capacity of 12.500 tons. This lino is worked in conjunction with the Canadian National Railways, of which the Onnadian, Northern, and Grand Trunk systems comprise the gi eater mileage. The National Railways give two transeontint'uta! lines, while the well-known Canadian Pacific system makes the third transcontinental system within the Dominion. The Minister of Marine officially siaterf in November last thai the profits which had accrued since the construction of the Government steamers—during the period of the war—h?d paid the entire outlay on the date cf his announcement.
