TOWN PLANNING SOCIETY

The 31st annual meeting of the Ameni- , ties and Town Planning Society was held 1 in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The \ president (Mr A. Bathgate) was in the ■ chair. In moving the adoption of the annual i report (which has been published! the ' President said that during the year the society had suffered heavy losses" by tho deaths of three members of committee—- | Messrs T. Brown, T.-R. Fisher, and G. Joachim. All throe had rendered valuable service to the society. Mr Brown had been one of the founders of the society. Mr Fisher had been the first hon. treasured, and later vice-president. It was sad to see old names like those dropping oil', and it Was to be Jioped that their successors would show the same interest in the society. There were a number of things to do during the coming year. They might try to increase the membership. In a city like Dunedin they should have a far bigger membership. The more members they had the more money they would have to work with. He hoped that the coming year would show better results. The City | Council had given consent to plant trees from Rattray street to the Anderson Bav road. When this was done the street would present a better appearance than at present, as the railway line and yards would be hidden from view. The society, during the past year, had been fortunate, as far as bequests and donations were concerned. Mr T. Brown had left them £IOO and Mr Smeaton £2OO. He suggested that the southern portion of Moray place should be planted and renamed Smeaton ! streets, as Moray place ran around the j Octagon and was very confusing. Another matter to be-attended to this year was j the planting of trees at the south end of the Oval. Trees had been planted there, but had not do'..- too well. £lO had been voted for the importation of trees from France. Unfortunately this £lO was lost them, as the trees had not arrived, probably due to tho shipping congestion, and when they did arrive they would not be alive. He was glad to see that sheep had replaced horses on the reserves, bui he thought there were too many fences about the reserves. They should see that the public had every access to the Town Belt. Hon. G. M. Thomson seconded the motion, which was carried. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year;— President, Mr A. Bathgate; vice-president, Hon. G. M. Chamberlain; hon auditors, Messrs Barr, Leary, and Co.; hon. secretaries town planning branch, Messrs H. Mandeno and B. B. Hooper. A voteof thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
