Huge sums have been paid for famous old pktures. Franz Hals's 'Old Lndy' was purchased a few years ago for £27,400. The top price for a Romney is £41,370; or a Holbein, £72,003; for a Velasquez, £30,000 ; and for a Rembrandt, £IOO,OOO. Worth more than any of these is Raphael's ' P.'jtnshenger Madonna,' sold to _an _ American in 1914 "for £134X00. This picture is printed on a panel measuring 23in by 17in 2in thick. It rest, therefore, about £350 per square inch.
