CROESUS AT THE SLINGS
WHARF LABOR £6 A DAT. Darwin wharf laborers’ wages, according to Melbourne Herald,’ amounted to £76 10s each for 13 days’ work, loading the steamer Townsville. The wharf laborers recently demanded and were granted 5s an hour for day work, 7s 6d for night work, and 10s an hour on Sunday. Owing to the difficulty of keeping down temperatures in tho hold, the work was all done at night As it was proceeding very slowly, tho stevedore agreed to allow 17 shifts of 12 hours to complete the work. On an average 65 men were employed, which works out at about £76 10s a man for tho 13 days’ full work. This does not include the cost of handling at the meat works and railing to the wharf.
