PROPOSED TOWN HALL

DELAY OF NINE MONTHS. METHOD OF FINANCE. The City Council gave further consideration last evening to the Finance Committee’s report on the proposed Town Hall. They outlined the method devised by the Town Clerk to meet the position—viz., that deductions be made over a period of years from the annual contributions of the trading departments to the renewal fund account, these deductions to be diverted to cover the cost of the building. The committee recommended that the calling of tenders for the work be delayed for nine mouths, when it was possible that industrial conditions might have improved. In conjunction with this a letter was read from the Philharmonic Society emphasising the urgency of a Town Hall.

An amendment moved at the* last meet ing was -that the clause be struck out

Tho debate was resumed last night by Cr Thorn, followed by Or Gilder, both of whom supported the amendment in view of labor conditions and tho demand for material and labor for more urgent works. Gr Bradley said that in view of loans fa'line duo in a year or two this project should be held over in the meantime, and he would support the committee. The Mayor (Mr Begg) said there was considerable urgenev for tMs work, and he thought they should support tho committee in their recommendation of a delay for nine months onlv in calling tenders. He could not understand how, if Wajgarni i and Christchurch could find labor and material for town halls, Dunedin could not.

Or Wilson said they had already lost : £IO,OOO by not carrying out the work ! when proposed before, and it was by no I means assured that if thev dclaved in- ' definitely the cost would be less. Ho couid assure councillors that they were rot committing themselves to any tender, i The committee would not accept a tender disproportionately high when the period of nine months stipulated had elapsed.

The amendment was lost, and the com mittee’s recommendation for a delin' of nine months in calling tenders was carried.
