ESCAPE FROM GAOL

A BOY’S ESCAPADE. How a_youth of 14 escaped from the custody of the police and was recaptured was told in the City Police Court this morn ng before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, o.M. ihe boy is one of four boys who were recently before the Court to answer a series of charges of breaking and entering various premises, and who were committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. He was_ charged that, on April 14 at Duneain, being a person awaiting sentence the police gaol, Dunedin, he attempted to escape. Accused pleaded guilty. . Constable Harris said" ho was on gaol duty at 1 p.m. on tho 14th. It was the custom to transfer the prisoners from the exercise yard to the cells for dinner, and to bring them back to the yard after dinner. The colls were on the' top flat, and witness brought the prisoners, nine in number, to tho second flat. There he unlocked a door and went to the bottom flat to unlock the door leading to the yard. When the prisoners came down to the yard there were only eight. The accused was missing. Ho was later arrested by Detective Hall in Elder street. Accused_ had got away by going along the_ corridpr on the second iloor and down a flight of stairs through the police station, thence out the back gate. The Magistrate asked accused why he ran away, but he would make no reply. The Magistrate: Is it going to happen again? Accused: Ho.

Accused was remanded for seven days for sentence.
