DEATH OF THREE CAPTAINS

Captain Samuel Cochrane, who was at one time in the Auckland Harbor Brxiixl service, died suddenly on Sunday morning last as the result of syncope. Captain Cochrane, who was 78 years of age, for many years had command of dredge 121, and later of the dredge Hapai. "in his younger clays he cerved in the British, American, and Chilian navies at various intervals. Captain E. Miller, for 52 years in the service of the Melbourne Harbor Trust, and who for the latter 14 years filled the position of assistant harbor master, died on March 15 at Melbourne after a long illness. The late Captain Miller was for many years connected with the Royal Sa-va-1 Reserve, retiring some 12 years ago with the honorary rank of commander. The death occurred in Wellington Hospital on Monday of Captain John George Gilbertson, a well-known figure on the local waterfront for a great many years. Captain Gilbertson, who was in his* 65th year, wag in former years an officer on various steamers trading out of Wellington, principally between that port and" the West Coast and Wanganui. He was born at Lerwick, Shetland Islands, and came to Xew Zealand about 40 years ago. Eleven months ago he met with an accident when he was on the West Coast, and had been ailing over since. He has left a widow and a family of two sons and five daughters. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. li. Hut. son,_ ofthe Brooklyn Presbyterian Church, officiating at the graveside' at Karori.
