WEATHER REPORT. The Government Meteorologist (Rev. D. C. Bates) supplied the following at 9 a m. to-day :

Bates) supplied the following at noon to-day : —Variable and strong breezes, westerly wind at times; expect dull weather with much mist ami fog in parts ; rain probable; barometer unsteady with a falling tendency; sea rough ; tides moderate. SAlLED.—December 17. Storm, b.s. (6.30 a.m.). 405 tone, Robertson. for Wanganui via ports. Kotare, s.s. (1.5 p.m.), 141 ' tons, Mumby, for Bluff and Riverton. The Storm completed her loading last night, byt.was detained in port until early this morning owing to a thck fog. She sailed at 6.50 a.m. for way ports and Wanganui. The Stella is due at Dunedin on Monday morning from Westport. After discharge of her coal cargo, she will load general freight for Timaru and Wellington. Iho Breeze is due at Dunedin on Friday morning from Wanganui direct. She will bo despatched on Friday evening for Timaru, Lyttelton, Picton, and Wanganui. The To Annn arrived nt Xapier at- 7 a.m. to-day from Lyttelton. She is to sail on Fridnv for Gisborne and Auckland. The Manuka arrived at Sydney nt 7 a.m. yesterday from Wellington. The Moeraki is to leave Wellington tomorrow afternoon for Sydney and Hobart. The weather was fine on the West Coast to-day. There was a moderate swell on the bar at Greymouth, and the sea was smooth on the Westport bar. VESSELS IX PORT AT XOOX TO-DAY. Kakapn, Birch street wharf. Kniapoi, Birch street wharf. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Mararna arrived at Lyttelton at 10.15 a.m. to-day from Wellington, and mails and passengers connected with the second express for the south from Christchurch SAILIXG OF RIVERIXA POSTROKED. A cablegram from Sydney states that the sailing of the Rivefina from that port for Wellington has been postponed indefinitely owing to the marine engineers’ strike. THE MONOWAT. The Monowai will remain at Auckland until Friday in order to load transhipments from the Niagara from Vancouver for southern ports. The Monowai will proceed direct- to Wellington, and will as-

sist in the ferry service for two trips early next week. * She is to leave Lyttelton dn December 25 for Dunedin, where she should arrive on Boxing Day. Cable advice received by the Union Company states that the R.'M.S. Makura arrived at Vancouver at 8 a.m. on Sunday last from Auckland via Suva and Honolulu. She is to sail to-day for Auckland and Sydney via ports. THE ISLAND STEAMER., The Island steamer Flora left Rarotonga at 6.30 p.m. on Monday direct for Auckland. She is bringing the usual shipment. of fruit and other island products for New Zealand, and is clue at Auckland on December 23. SHAW, SAVILL STEAMERS. The Arawa is expected to come out of dock at Port Chalmers on Friday. She will load a large quantity of wool, butter, frozen meat, etc., end leave Port about Tuesday next for Timaru and Wellington to complete loading. The vessel is now timed to leave Wellington on January 3 for London, but owing to the delay at Port Chalmers, she will probably not clear the Dominion until about January 5. _The Pakeha, which is now loading at Napier, is to leave that port on Saturday for Whangarei and Auckland to complete her cargo. S'he is limed to leave Auckland on January 3 for London. The Mahana is to leave Wellington tomorrow for Gisborne for Homeward loading. Sierra, well known at the New South ales port in connection with the Oceanic Steamship Company’s mail service, had been sold out ot t*he service. Tho Sierrfi has been off the San Francisco-Sydney run for some time, having been commandeered during the war by the United States Shipping Board for trooping. She had been running in the Atlantic for a time, and after being withdrawn was badly damaged through an outbreak of fire on board. The owners subsequently decided to dispose of the vessel. Arrangements are being made ta replace the Sierra with a larger and more up-to-date steamer. -No particulars are available of the new vessel, but she will, it is expected, be a highclass passenger boat with a good turn of speed. STRANDED STEAMER BOMBALA. Ihe Australian Steamship passenger steamer Bomba-la, which went dgrotmd on the Salamander Reef, off the Queensland coast, on the night of December 9, is a fine steel vessel of 3,539 tons gloss register. She is one of the most popular passenger steamers running in the Melbourne to Queensland service. Sho has tripleexpansion engines, developing 745 indicated horse-power, is fitted with refrigerating machinery, and carries wireless telegraph apparatus. There is accommodation for about 200 passengers. The Bombala was built at Sunderland for the Australian Steamships, Limited (Howard Smith, Limited), in 1903, and since her arrival in Australian waters in 1904 has been engaged almost continuously in the trade between Melbourne and Townsville, makng trips via Sydney and Brisbane,
