STARTLING INDICTMENT. BISHOP OLEABY" SPEAKS OUT. WELLINGTON - , December 15. The recewt issue of Auckland's Roman Catholic magazine, 'The Month,' has just arrived in Wellington, and one of the most surprising features is a powerful editorial by His Lordship Dr Geary, Catholic Bishop of Auckland'. Dealing with the forthcora. ing poll on Prohibition, one paragraph is headed ' Human Wreckage.' Dr deary writes thus regarding the liquor trade: "Herein lies one of the 'tragedies of the traffic in intoxicating drink—the "antagonism between the monetary interests of a large section of 'the Trade' " and the welfare of the individual and the nation. Out in 'No Maifs Land,' " close in front of trenches where we served as a military chaplain, there laid " the piled-up or scattered bodies—all unburied—of over three thousand gallant "colonial storm troops that had been destroyed by a sudden whirlwind of firo v "from the nearby German lines. That moving speotacle of battered bodies does "not represent a tithe of the humaD wreckage left all over this Dominion by " the sins of a considerable section of ' the Trade,' Vhom neither moral suasion "nor the civil law nor the appeal of pity has been able to bring within control. "And the- less appeal there is to conscience in 'the Trade' the more must the "State rely for reform upon its power and right of repressing a traffic the " evils of which it has hopelessly failed to reduce to" the limits of tolerance or "moderation. 'As to the right of a State to suppress the liquor traffic,' «aid " the great Cath6lic Archbishop Spalding, ' there can bo no question, since the /'right to 6uppre:s crime involves the right to suppress its chief cause.' It is "the sins and the sin-making and crime attendant upon the operations of 'the "Trade' that have created the movement for its abolition; .they have furnished "it with its chief driving force; they have made it (in our personal view) a whole"some necessity in a land that would give its best "to the shaping of the new and " better era -that is, we hope, at hand." JQEAR MR PROHIBITIONIST,We do not. require your advice as to how we should vote. We know from experience just what is good for us; also, that our country will be better served by the carrying of Continuance. This will people happy and contented, which is infinitely better than the indu< and general turmoil existing in Prohibition America to-day. We (and the sensible portion of the community) do not mind vour coarse language. J his snows conclusively that you do not know the first rudiments of iemperance.
