At the mcntMv meeting of the Dunedin branch of the Engineers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association a resolution was passed emphatically protesting against members, eligible to retire on superannuation, after 40 years, being allowed to remain in the service. It was pointed out that the retention of these members blocked the way of promotion of the younger men, and was one reason why so much discontent prevailed. The meeting also considered that a system of compulsory retirement would largely assist in the repatriation of returned soldiers by creating vacancies in the service which could be tilled from that source. Many young members had grown tired of waiting for promotion, and.had.resigned their positions..in disr jurt.
