RUGBY. OTAGO v. -SOUTH OTAGO. An attendance of over 2.000 witnessed the match between Otago and South Otago played at Carisbvook on Saturday afternoon in aid of the injured players’ fund. The weather was fine, with a blight sun, which continued to shine till short.y before time, when conditions became stormy. Otago had a fairly easy win, the game finishing in their lavor by 43 points to 14. The winners dominated practically throughout the first sped, their opponents showing little combination and a very weak defence. In the first half Ota.ur scored 26 points to their opponents’ 3 (a goal from a free kick), 3ml would have scored even more but for faulty passing by the backs. Jn the second spell South Otago showed a great improvement nil round, but the Otago forwards were too clever for them and the backs too fast. It was organised -and carried out by the Port Chalmers Returned Soldiers’ Cliib, and it -proved to be a fitting finale to a series of weekly social dances, which culminated with a. masked ball in the Garrison Hall cn the previous Fri-dav. A fancy dress procession marched from’ King Edward’s square on S-turday afternoon to ’the R cmtioii Ground,’ the Pipe Band and the .School j Band participating. Northern, winners of this season’s cup, played a team selected from the Otago clubs on Culling Park on Saturday. The match attracted very little attention, there being only a- handful of spectators. In the Otago team Tait and F. Haig replaced Banwell and Trcvathan in the backs. The game was not peculiarly attractive, a, strong wind blowing, ana the hall was any shape but round. Otago kicked off, playing against the wind ami sun. Northern immediately attacked, butCampbell’s shot went wide. Otago were the first to score. The left wing centred to Henderson, who transferred to O. Alloo, who neatly headed the .ball into the net. Northern’s one and only goal was secured by Ruddiman, although Campbell worked hard and shot hard. Half-time saw Otago with two goals to their credit (the second one by Campbell) against Northern’* one. The second spell was more lively, Northern battling hard to wipe out the deficit.
