SEA EROSION AT ST. CLAIR

Tho important question of sea ci'OMon at St. Clair wiis again mentioned at a meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council last evening. In reply to a <|iiastdon by Cr Dove, the Mbyor said that lie had had no information whatever concerning the Government engineer's report on the erosion of the St. Clair beach. Apparently, said the Mayor, the City p-eoplu we re iwi taking any interest in the matter. The general opinion expressed was that -the sand on the beach would come and.go as it pleased. Gr Dove said they wcro all aware of that fact; but the hill was fast disappearing for .all time. He wont on to say that he had been surprised to sue another big gap out of tho hill on the St. Kilda side of tho children's playground. It was at least two inoutlis 'binco tho engineer had seen sent out to make his .report, and he thought it was about time that Sir William Eraser shook himself together and woke up. The Mayor taid that, in, his opinion, it was the concrete wall at St. Clair which was tho cau-ie of the trouble. Until the end of tho beach at the esplanade was .raided the sea would* continue to scour out the sand at the St. Glair end of the beach. Or Seddon said he agreed with thin opinion, and added that .t was a great mistake to build a perpeiKiicukir wu!l. At Blackpool, in England where a gradual slope had been proviaed, there were miles of beach, although there were much heavier seas there than at St. Clair. Tho Mayor said that he would communicate with tho Miinistw of Public Works jmd the member for the district, and if ■ the report did not come to h-aii-a this week steps would bo taken to call a public meeting in the borough in Of-uor that the whole position could be discussed and scmo immediate action taken in the matter.
