WAKE UP, MAORI HILL!

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—T should like to add a further word in support of 'Advance, Maori Hill,' in his efforts to stimulate an awakening for tram facilities for our borough. 1 bad hoped to see others step in to take up the cudgels, and, having also been out of town, have held back a few_ days. " Advance " is urging the formation of a local association in order to present a combined attack an our City Council. I understand there is a league in Maori Hill, who have for their objects the welfare of the district generally, and they were mentioned as having done good service in arranging accommodation at show time. Is this question of tram facilities bevond the sphereof their efforts? If so. I trust that " Advance " will make a definite move to call a meeting of residents to discuss this matter and arrange a deputation to wait on the City Conncl. I enclose my <sard, and give you permission, sir, to pass it on to " Advance." 1 shall be pteased if he will call on me. There is one point that- "Advance" mentions that has been continuously advocated —that is, the linking up of the present electric oar to Maori Hill with the Stuart street line. It was always spoken of as likely to -receive attention when a ' new Order in Council was issued to the Tram Company: but with tho 'amalgamation with the Oity this was allowed to drop_ for want of a district representative on the council to look after our imniediate local interests. It is undoubtedly a feasible suggestion, and, I am sure, could be worked without any difficulty if it were, not for the competitive spirit between tbe two tram companies. This scheme, although only a reasonable request, should not,' however, bo allowed to overshadow the more pertinent demand' for the direct car up Driver's road. Has this Question no further advocates beyond "Advance" and myself? If such is the case, it can be quite easily understood that the City Council will tako no heed of the matter unless there is a. more clamorous demand. Thanking you, sir, for this opportunity afforded to ventilate this matter—l am, etc., " HfSTLB. Julv 2.
