On the 26th tilt., at the Strand Tea Booms, Mr W. A. Service, first assistant J in the Moxmngton School, who has been appointed to the position of lecturer at the Ohristchurah -. Training College, was entertained by the School Committee. Tho ehainran (Mr J. W. Patten) presided, and there were present the other members of the committee; and their wives, several efmemb«T3. the school staff, and the chairman of the Education. Board (Mr J. Wallace). Mr Patton, on 'behalf of the School Committee, presented Mr Servici with a, case ' of pipes, and Mrs Service with a Doulfcoa vase. In doing so he referred to the excellewt work done by Mr Service during the eight years he had been in Momington, and) to the happy relations that had existed between.him "and his pupils. Mir W. Davidson intimated that the teachers and the Sixth Standard pupils had presented Mr Service with a suit case. He dso spoke in the highest terms of Mr Service as a teacher and a man. Mr Wallace regretted the loss to Otago caused by the promotion of Mr Service, but remarked that wo should regard our system of education from a -national and not .i parochial point of view, and what was our loss was Canterbury's gain. Several other speakers paid tribute to the good qualities of Mr Service, who suitably and feelingly replied, thanking 'all his friends for their great kindness to him and his family. John D. Wilson, at present chaplain mt Trentham, to succeed the late Rev. James Clarko. Mr S. Smith was last night elected chairman of the Dunedin Starr-Bowke-tt Building Society, and Mr A. Rowe (tost clerk), who has been promoted to Christchurch in the oapacitv of officer in charge Christchurch Exchange. The staff over whom this popular officer was in charge felt that they could not let him go without some tangible evidence of the esteem in which- he was held bv them. Ma- Rowe was presented with* a gold-mounted fountain pen ! and wallet (inscribed) by Mr H. Clarke on i behalf of the staff. Mr Rowe feelingly re|aponded.
