ARRIVED.—May 3. Rosamond, s.s. (4 a.m.), 721 tons, Bruce, from Wellington and Lyttelton. SAILED.—May 3. Breeze, s.s. (0.25 a.m.), 556 tons, Venn, for Wanganui via ports.

The Rosamond arrived here early this morning from Wellington and Lyttelton. She is discharging ' 672 tons _ of general cargo, which includes transhipments ex the Moeraki and Manuka from Sydney. The Rosamond will sail to-day for 0 amaru and Timara to load produce for Napier and Gisborne. The Oalm is expected to leave Wellington to-day with a full general cargo for Dunedin. -She should arrive here on Monday morning, and is fixed to sail on Monday night for Timarn, Lyttelton. Wellington, and Wanganui. Tiro brigantine Aratapu completed her discharge to-day. She will commence loading on Monday morning for Wellington, for which port she will .probably sail on Tuesday morning. The Kahika is to leave Lyttelton on Monday for Westport, where she will load ooal for Lyttelton and, Timara. The Kamona left Westport at midnight last night, ooal laden, for Lyttelton. Sht null afterwards proceed to Greymouth to load for Lyttelton. Tho Karon left Sydney at 9 a.m. yesterday with a large shipment of general cargo for Auckland. Tho Kaitangata arrived at Auckland at 5 p.m. yesterday from Newcastle. She has a full cargo of ooal for discharge wt the northern port. The Kini is expected to leave Greymouth to-night with a full cargo of coal for Bluff and Dunedin. The Karamu will leave Wellington on Monday for Greymouth with the barquentim- lima in tow. lima will load timber at Greymouth for Adelaide, and the Karamu will load, coal for Wellington. Tire Koromiko is to leave Lyttelton today with a full cargo for Sydney. After discharge she will go to Newcastle to load coal for a New Zealand port. The Kowhai was placed on the Wellington slip to-day for repairs. She will proceed to Greymouth early next week to load coal for Wellington. The Rakanoa arrived at Sydney on Thursday night from Auckland. She has been fixed to load coal at Newcastle early next week for Auckland. The liner War Courage is due at Auckland to-morrow morning from Wellington. Rho will load 19.C00 bales of wool and 200 tons of tallow at the northern port lor London. The War Courage will Ica'-e Auckland about May 20 for England via Panama. The W 7 ar Opal, which sailed fiy>m Gisborne on Monday last tor Liverpool, loaded 6,000 oases of meat and 23,498 bales of wool. The A and A. steamer Tasmania is to go on the loading berth at Now \ork for Auckland,. Wellington. Melbourne, and Sydney. The Scales ketch Rira, which left- Auckland for Tonga on Monday' evening last, returned to port on Tuesday owing to Ike illness of tiro master, Captain Champion. The Monowai’s steering gear gave trouble during her trip from Dunedin to Lyttelton on Wednesday, and on reaching the heads the tug Lyttelton went cut to meet her in case she required assistance in berthing. The trouble was attended to on Thursday 7. The vessel was unable to sail for Wellington and East Coast ports on Thursday owing to the large amount of cargo to be hand .eel. She was to be despatched, for the north yesterday afternoon. Refusal of ship owners to refund prepaid freight money on cargoes loaded but not delivered because of the Government orders of 1917 forbidding sailing vessels to depart for the war zone has been upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States. Although freights in most instances have declined materially, the rates for cargo between Calcutta and Australia have been maintained at 120s a ton. Private cable messages, however, advise that the rates have now been reduced to 80s a ton. So far no attempt has been made to refloat the Union Steam Ship Company’s bulk No. 6, which sank at her moorings in Auckland Harbor on tho morning _ of April 21. On April 23 some salvaging of rigging and material was carried, out, but it is understood that she will be lifted into shallow water by punts, and, tlhe coal being discharged, will be pumped out and refloated. 9 The Canadian twin-screw motor schooner Laurel Whalen, which put into Auckland in January last for repairs, is expected to be ready for sea about the end of May. Bound from Sydney to Vancouver, both of her crank shafts had smashed before she got as far as Suva. Under canvas she turned towards Auckland in distress. A portion of her cargo, consisting

of ■wheat, tallow, etc., which she had previously shipped at Australia, wiH probably be disci larged and sold loyally at Auckland. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Maori arrived at Lyttelton, at 7.40 a.m. to-day from Wellington, and mails and passengers connected, with the first express for tiho south. OUTWARD SAN FRANCISCO MAIL. The Union Company advise that the R.M.S. Paloona will leave Wellingtton this evening with mails, passengers, and general freight for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete. NIAGARA LEAVES HONOLULU. Advice received by the Union Company states that the R.M.S. Niagara arrived at Honolulu on Wednesday (duo date) from Auckland and Suva, and sailed again the same day for Vancouver, She ia due at the Canadian port on May 6. INCOMING VANCOUVER MAIL. Cable advice received by the Union •Company states that the R.M.S. Makura arrived; at Suva at 12.30 p.m. yesterday from Vancouver and Honolulu, and sailed at 7 last evening for Auckland. The vessel, which was declared to be a clean ship at Suva, is duo at Auckland on Monday evening, and is expected to berth on Tuesday morning to land European and American mails and passengers and discharge a largo shipment of general merchandise. The Makura will not proceed to Sydney this trip. She is timed to leave Auckland on Tuesday, May 13, for Suva, Honolulu, and Vancouver. BHAMO DELAYED. Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co., local agents for the steamer Bhamo, ad visa that the vessel lias been delayed at Wellington, and will not leave that port until Monday afternoon for Dunedin. She should arrive here on Wednesday morning next, and will discharge the balance of hep Home cargo at the Victoria ■wharf. The Bhamo will not load at Port Chalmers, as was previously reported. She will sail about tho cad of next week for Oamaru and Wellington to load for London, sailing from Wellington about May 25 for the Home port via Panama. SYDNEY-WELLTNGTON SERVICE Tlis Union Company advise that tile Atua, which -arrived at Sydney at 6 p.m. on Thursday from Auckland, will leave tho New South Wales port on Tueadaj next for Wellington direct with mails and cargo only. The vessel will make the trip in place of the Moeraki, which ia now at Sydney. The Atua will return to Sydney from Wellington, taking passengers and cargo. BAST COAST PASSENGER SERVICE. MOKOIA TO RELIEVE MONOWAI. The Union Company advise that the Mokoia, which is at present undergoing overhaul at Port Chalmers, will be recommissioned at tho end of next week. She will then come to Dunedin to load, and will sail on Tuesday, May 13, for Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, . Gisborne, and. Auckland, in place of the Monowai. Tlie latter vessel, on her arrival here from Auckland and way ports, will withdraw to undergo survey and overhaul at Port Chalmers. The Mokoia has been at Port for several weeks past, and has received a very extensive overhaul. Her hull has been painted green, and the familiar rod funnel has reappeared, which gives her a very smart appearance after the all-grey color which slio was painted while under contract to the Imperial Government. THE POET SYDNEY. The liner Port Sydney' left Newcastle yesterday for Wellington with 25 returned New Zealand munition workers. The vessel is not bringing any cargo for New Zealand. She is due at Wellington on .May 8, and after putting in her quarantine period at that port will go to Timaru to commence loading. From Timaru the vessel will return to Wellington to fill up, and is to sail from there about May 21 for London via Panama. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. AUCKLAND.
