CARRIAGE OF MAILS
* AUSTRALIA SAVES £89,000. The new basis of assessment for the carriage of mails on the State railways adopted by the Postal Department, on tho recommendation of the Inter-State Commission, has disclosed to the Post-master-General the pleasing fact that a saving of £89,000 a year has resulted to the Postal Department. In 1915, under the old system, the total payment to the State railways amounted' to £273,261. ' Under the new svstem the payments in 1918 totalled £184,263, The payments to tho separate States wore:—New South Wales. £66,496, against £83,185 in 1915; Victoria £42,343, against £55,244 in 1915; South Australia, £12,665, against. £30,387 in 1915; Queensland, £45.449, against £67,920 in 1915; Wept Australia £12,736, against £29,305 in 1915, Tasmania, £4,574, against £7,220 in 1915. Mr Webster says that this illustrates the difference between the scientific and unscientific assessment of charges.
