DONEDIN'S NEW MAYOR

Mr W. Begg was born in Edinburgh, and arrived at an early a-ge with his parents in Duine-din, the family taking up their residence in North-east Valley in 1879. After .attending the public schools and Technical School he took a course of chemistry at the Otago University, and afterwards oompleted'his studies at the Leeds University. After a brief visit to the United States he has since conducted the fellmongery business established by his late father. The Mayor-elect was a good all-round athlete, being a member of the Union Football Club's senior team, the Dunedin Athletic Club, and the Otago Cvcling Club. For years he was the official handicapper of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Cyclists' Union, and also handicapper and director of the Caledonian Society. He was also an enthusiastic

member of the old North Dunedin Rifles, holding the rank Of lieutenant. In addition, he was one of the founders of the North-east Vallev Bowling Club, and a member of the Borough Council. Four years ago he became a member of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. _ During the same period he has been chairman of "the Gas Committee of the City Council.
