The successor to Dr Fan-is as district health officer for Otago and Southland is l)r T. Hughes, who is being transferred from Auckland, and wilf probably take over the duties in the course of~a few days. Senior-sergeant Patrick Crean, well known toothers besides his comrades of the Police Force, died at Wellington this morning. Ho was for years stationed at Blenheim, then at tho Thames, and more recently at Mount Cook, Wellington. Mr D. S. Mackenzie, of Clutha, a son of Sir Thomas Mackenzie, High Commissioner for New Zealand, is visiting Christchurch. All the younger members of Sir Thomas Mackenzie's family are now on their way back or about to leave England for New Zealand. Mr H. D. Tennent, district repatriation officer, in continuance of his inspecting tour, was to-day in North Otago. The Hon. G. M. Thomson, who has been on a visit to the North Island investigating fishery and other problems, returned to Dtmodin last night. The. Rev. R. S. Gray_ returned to Dunedin by the express train from the north last night. The Rev. F. G. Cumming has receivod word that his son, Trumpeter F. G. Cumming, who went away with the 12th Reinforcements, and has been twice wounded, is returning by the Carpentaria, which is due at Lyttelton about the 13th inst. Prior to his departure from Oamaru Mr A. Hanna, who has been appointed to take charge of the Portobello School, was presented with a purse of sovereigns by the staff and puils of the South School, Oamaru, where lie has been stationed for some years. The school band presented Mr Hanna with a fountain pen, and the ■committee gave him a silver-mounted ebony baton. The Otago men of tho Taimii, whioh reached. Wellington on Tuesday, will arrive at Dunedin by the express at 5 o'clock this evening. Thirteen of the Otago men who arrived at Wellington by tho troopship Raranga on Monday reached Dunedin by the second express last night. Captain Dobson met tho men on behalf of tha Defence Department, and representatives of the Otago Women's Patriotic Association distributed ■ cigarettes and chocolate. Cars to convey the local men to their homes were provided by the Otago Motor Club. The southern quota by the Raranga consisted of 28 men, of whom 14 were for Dunedin and 14 for stations south of the City. Only 13 of the 28, however, _ arrived last evening, the remainder staying in Wellington.
