MINING

Considering that only ouo furnace was in commission, the smelting returns for the four weeks’ run of the Mount Lyell Company's reduction works, ended on January 15, were very satisfactory. Although the total amount or materials furnaced—ll,293 tons —was only 1,479 tons more than that treated in the preceding month, the output of copper was 120 tons higher, while it was also an increase of 15 tons over the production for the four weeks to December 18, during which period 15,262 tons of ore and concentrates were treated for an output of 435 tons of copper. The increase is officially stated to be due to the higher grade of the North Lyell ore treated, so that, presumably, they have been drawing a bit more heavily than usual on the rich material of N r o. 49 stopo at the I.looft level, in order to compensate for the restricted output of ore caused by shortage of labor. And there is no question about the wonderfully high grade of some of the ore from this stope, which is as good now at ft height of over 40ft above the ground floor as when work was first started on it disclosing bands or layers ‘ of ore worth 40 per cent, copper.
