HIDES AND CALF SKINS

REASON OP EXPORT EMBARGO. [Per United Press Association,] AUCKLAND, March 19. The embargo upon the export of hides and calf skins was the subject of a statement by tho Board of Trade. The embargo was not absolute, it was stated, in that permits for export would bo granted for all hides and calf skins not required for New Zealand tanneries. The object, of the regulations was to provide that tanners should havo their iequiroments met. Prices for hides wore fixed at the old Imperial schedule. It. is stat'd that these were considered to bo fair by producer's. It was considered that in tho interests of consumers generally hide prices should bo controlled, as leather prices were subject to sharp fluctuations, and necessarily prices of footwear showed an advancing tendency. Also another main reason for Iho action taken by the beard was to protect their standardisation of the footwear scheme.
