THE TRAMWAYS MANAGER.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln your last night’s issue Mr James Jeffery makes a personal attack against the tramways manager. In support of same, he makes certain statements, such statements being absolutely incorrect. The facts in connection with the man who resigned owing to a bad leg arc as follow : This man .sent in a written resignation on October 4. 1918, stating that his cole reason for retiring was due to the state of his leg, which had troubled him mi and off for some 20 years. A few weeks prior to sending in tho above resignation this man«spoke to the tramways manager on tho street, and stated that his leg was again giving him trouble, and lie thought that ho would require to get a change of employment. Tho manager promised him the first suitable vacancy that occurred, but heard nothing further from him until ho received his resignation. In a letter dated October 23, 1910. the Otago Tramways Industrial Union of Workers placed tins man’s case before the Tramways Committee. In a minute to the committee dated October 30, 1913. the manager stated: “ was a very good workman, and a man that never gave the department any trouble. Ho is a man that I can thoroughly recommend foa position such as caretaker of a public convenience, and I am sure that at such work he would give every satisfaction.' The Tramways Committee decided that tho Town Clerk should inform the Tramways Union that the man referred to should report himself to tho manager if still desirous of returning to the council’s employ. The manager heard nothing further from the union, neither has tho man reported to him. There is no record of two other men with over 50 years’ service resigning within the past few months, and no employee during the last. 13 years has been put out of the service because he was ‘‘done ”5 and tho manager informs me that, as a matter of fact, the exact opposite procedure has always been followed by him, and this fact should bo well known to all officers and employees in the service. The files of your paper will show that Mr Jeffery has made many personal_ attacks against the manager, and I might state that his previous attacks were on a par with his present—viz., bused on supposed facts which were absolutely incorrect. —I am, etc., W. A. Scott, Chairman Tramways Committee. March 18.
