This is an unusual love story, with a distinctly original plot, which grips the attention from the first, and works up to a fine climax, with the interest increasing all the time. At the commencement Alma it shown as a country flower girl, whose fresh beauty wakens the passion of a passing waster. Failing in his attempts to wii her dishonorably, ho eventually persuades 'her that he is really in love with her, and she consemts to marry him. When J! is too late for her to retract, he reveals that ho runs a gambling saloon, and forcei her to act as a decoy bv stating that the marriage was a fake. The situations call for great emotional power, and Alms Rubens rises to fine heights of artistry Thera is a deep note of pathos at timeSj and the ending is not only totally unexpected, hut entirely satisfactory.
