UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The regular meeting of the Council of the University of Otago was held this afternoon, tho Chancellor (Rov. A. Cameron) in the chair. The Finance Committee reported that consideration of the teaching of medicine in the Medical School was held over. Mr Hinton was appointed lecturer in phj ics for one year at a salary of £250, provided that Miss Blaclcie conduct the classes in physics formerly conducted by Miss H. Cameron. Consideration of Mr Davies’s request for increased remuneration to nurses at the Dental School was held over till next meeting. The, committee considered a letter from Dr Mackay asking for increase in salary. The committee resolved to make no increase in salary, but to recommend the council to appoint Dr Mackay as lecturer on physiology’to massage students during the afternoons, at £f>o per annum. The total salary of Dr Mackay would then bo £250 per annum. A sub-comrnittee was set up to confer with the W.E.A., and to act in reference to the institution of a special class in economics. At a combined meeting of the Finance and Medical Committees the business was consideration of tho steps to be taken for filling tho chair of medicine. It was resolved that a sub-committee, consisting of the Chancellor, the dean of the medical, faculty, and Dr Church bring up a detailed rs-port and submit it to the committee before tho meeting of council. The sub-committee as to filling positions in the department of medicine recommended that the following appointments bo made in the department of medicine ; Professor of systematic medicine, £600; professor of clinical medicine and therapeutics, £500: lecturer on clinical medicine, who should also be medical tutor and clinical registrar, £4OO. Hie committee agreed to recommend that tho first and second positions should' be advertised in Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, and remitted to the council tho question of advertising position (c) beyond New Zealand. The committee recommend thah the duties attached to the respective posjp tiens should commence in Ist March, 1920, and that the council take steps to determine by due notice the present appointments of Drs Fitohett and Bowie, and that tho Hospital Board be asked to agree to positions on the hospital staff as senior physicians being allotted to the persons appointed. The above report was being discussed at 3 p.m. The Works Committee reported, as to the home science buildings on Tanna Hill, not to proceed with the attic, but to accept the tender of Mr Orr Campbell, for £1,630, for cornnlcting the wing.
