JUNIOR LAWN TENNIS

The school tennis tournament, organised by the Junior Lawn Tennis Association, was begun on the Otago and University Courts this morning. The collegia'te schools represented were Archerfieid. Columba, Girls' High, St. Dominic's, and St. Hilda's. The interest in the competition was keen, 75 girls having entered for the singles and 80 for the doubles. There wero a number of visitors watching the sport, including Captain J. SNicholson, Mr R. A. Wilkie, and teach jrs and principals of the five collegiate schools Messrs A. E. Harraway, T. Regg, and B. B. Couston are responsible for the successful etart of the tournament and th<| way in which the entries were played <■>""• u t ,, The following are the results oi the first round of the Championship Singles : F M'Kinnon beat P. Aitksn 6-1, V. Nichols beat M. Armstrong 6-1, M. Herbert beat E. Lamb 6-3. R. Blaikio beat Wilkinson 6-2, E, Barclay heat R. Smart 6-2, N. Duthie beat M. Gibson 6-4, c«. Richardson beat J. WirVr.dcn 6-4, C. Walton beat J. Jamieson 6-4. Second Round.—F. M'Kinnon beat \. Nichols 6-4, R. Blaikio beat, M. Herbert 6-2, E. Baxclay beat N. Duthie 6-1. O. Walton beat S. Richardson 6-5. _ This leaves the four winners m this event to play off the eemi-fmal and final rounds. , , The first round of the Handicap Douoles -vas plaved off. and. also the best pnrt or the second round, and m the Handicap Singles good progress was made with the flr*t round. . . Th- tournament will be continued during tlvs month, and a start will be made with the boys' events on Satin-day next en the Moana Courts.
