OBITUARY
The death is announced in the Australian Press of Mrs M. A. Browne, a colonist of 67 years, at the ripe age of 84 years. She was pro-sent in 1861 at the departure of Burke and Wills on their fatal exploring expedition into the interior of Australia. In the mid fifties she was well known in musical circles. Deceased was the mother of 18 cliildron, nine of whom survive her, and there are 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Three grandsons wero killed in action at the front, and two more are still on active service. The fast-diminishing band of early settlers sustained another loss by the death of Mrs Penelope Webb, who passed away at Aratapu, Northern Wairoa, last week. The deceased arrived in Auckland with her four children, in 1865, in the ship Andrew Jackson, to join her husband. Like most early settlers, Mrs Webb had to contend with many hardships and difficulties, when journeys had to be made by cutter, rowing boat, and on foot, and some of her experiences, especially in the North, were trying indeed. During her last illness she was visited by a of old of the North. The funeral* was attended by a large number of friends, including passengers by the ship Andrew Jackson and their descendants.
