The annual meeting of subscribers was held recently, Mr J. C. Smith in the chair. Tht-re was a fair attendance. Tne annual report, iuid biUanco-sheet were adopted as Tead. The institution has had a fairlv successful year, the subscript ions received from S3 members being £l3 ss. and flic cost of carrying: on the institution £ll 15s 3d. " ' , , The Librarian reported that 36 new books had been added to the Athenteum last year, making 3,170 in the library, with only 54 members. He was of opinion that, many in the community neglect-oil their obvious duty by not contributing to the support, of such a worth.v and useful institution. His labors on behalf of the institution "were of a varied nature, and most conducive to its welfare.. The Librarian drew the attention of members to the slate in which some of the books had been returned to ihe library, evidencing rough usase, and in several cai'.es positive defacement. As -those, could only be replaced at- considerable cost, and some not at a!l, he urged subscribers to see_ that they were not ill-used in homes by children. Keplacing thorn curtailed the power for purchasing now books. The committee considered whtit steps they should take to further the interest of the institution. After some consideration they recommended that the following scale of subscriptions would meet the approval of the members: —Four books per week, 12s 6d per year; three books per week, 10s per year!' two books per week, 7r= 6d per year; erne book per week, 5s per year.
