At the invitation of Mr A. Paters on the employees of Paterson and Barr, Ltd., assembled at bis reaidetco in Queen street to spend a social evening prior to his departure for England via America. A most enjoyable evening was spent in song and story, item's being contributed by the various employees in a, very acceptable mancer. The occasion was taken advantage of to present Mr Paterson, Mrs Paterson, and Miss Paterson with. Kma.ll tokens of the regard and esteem in which they are held by the employees. Reference was made to tho Idndly courtesy and consideration extended to them at oil times by Mr Paterson, and that they_ might have a pleasant and profitable trip and safe return wag the earnest wish of one -and all Mir Paterson, tn a few well-chosen remarks (on behalf of himself, Mrs, and Miss Paterson) thanked the enroloyces for ihoiv gifts ami the kindly feelings which accompanied tRm. A Wanganui message states that out of 22 applicants the Fire Board appointed Mr Jdhn TOilEarnis, formerly deputy-lsypor-intendflnb of the Auckland Brigade, superintendent of the W'amgauui Fire Brigade. Mr Williams (" Jack ") is well known _in Dumediii as an ex-Otago representative Riugby footballer. He was for 15 yeaa'a a member of the Dtmedin Oity Brigade. At a Bpecial meeting of the Forbury School Qommitteo on Thursday night the following recommendationf; for appointment to the staff wore made :—Fifth assistant, Miss M. Soottj tenth assistant, Miss E. Jeans; eleventh assistant, Miss M. Heward.
