LISBON, January 20. . Official: The Monarchists hold Oporto, Braga, and Vizeu (all in Northern Portugal). Martial law has been proclaimed, and warships have been sent to Oporto, which is strongly blockaded.

A statement on behalf of ex-King Manoel, published in the ‘ Daily Chronicle,’ says that, in view of the new position and the chaos in Portugal, caused by the assassination of Senhor Paes, he does not expect his supporters to be bound by the wish he expressed at the outbreak of war to refrain from a movement in his favor. He was in nowise privy to the present movement, but regards himself as absolutely at the service of the people. If they call him ho is prepared to go immediately. NUTITHERN 'PORTUGAL ROYALIST. O(IVERNMENT~DEYY ANXIETY. MADRID, January 21. (Received January 24, at 9.25 a.m.) The Monarchist leader in Northern Portugal. Senhor Piava Conceiro, has assumed tlic post, of Premier, and has appointed his colleagues. The Royalist flag has been hoisted in the principal northern towns, and the bands played the old Portuguese National Anthem. The Portuguese Govern incut have sent important contingents to suppress the Rovalist conspiracy. Government officials state that they have the position well in hand. The recognised leader of the Monarchist party does not support the movement, and showed the ringleader a telegram from ex-King Manoel deprecating any attempt at the restoration of tire monarchy.
