Permits aro granted for the slaughter of the young birds for boiling down to procure oil. M any protests have been made against this wholesale butchery, which has been referred to by Kir Douglas Mawson, but nothing definite was done until lately. It is asserted, upon good authority, that the birds are rounded up like sheep in hundreds and thousands, and forced to waddle up an inclined race, at the end of -which is the immense boiling cauldron. The poor birds drop into the boiling water alive, and die in agony. Before issuing further permission to butcher the birds, (the Tasmanian Government intend to investigate the matter. They have communicated with Captain S. A. White, the South Australian ornithologist, to ask him to undertake tlie task. This will be by no means easy work in these remote and frigid regions. The means of ''communication are few and difficult, and the expedition may take five or six months. However, Captain White is seriously considering the request. Bird lovers may rest assured that Captain Whivs wifi go thoroughly into the subject.
