ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the council of the above society was held last evening, Mr G. W. MTntosh (president) occupying the chair. Mr James Steven, manager of the hatcheries at Clinton, wrote That the supplies of brown trout ova for this season wore considerably better than last year, tho total for this season being 693,000, na against 456,000 for last year. He regretted to report that there would probably be a loss through bad ova of 160,000. —Received.

The Game Committee reported that a wire hod been received from the Minister of Internal Affairs advising that tho Boundary Commission between Southland and Otago would not be gone on with, and that no further action would ho taken iu tho matter. A letter had boon received from thp Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, acknowledging receipt of the society's letter urging that an additional area be thrown open at Tapanui for deer-shooting. A circular had been receive cl from the secretaay of the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies’ Association, advising that a conference would be held about tho first week in November or late in October. It was recommended that permission bo given to the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society to trap a few ep.mil iu tho Otago district for a chance ot blood. A letter had been received from the secretary of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society, advising that so far they had not been successful in their investigations ro Waitaki stalkers trespassing in the Otago forest. An application by Mr Jas. MTvenzio, Waipahi, to shoot deer for meat in Hie Tapanni Ranges had been held over in the meantime. It was recommended that Mr A. E. Johnston’s application to shoot deer in the Ixmg Valley for household purposes he declined.—Tho report was adopted. The Angling Committee reported that a letter hud been received from the secretary of the Marine Department staling that Mr Ayson would confer with them

re netting limits in Otago Harbor. A letter had been received from tho secretary of tho North Canterbury Society giving results of the conference held on tho 16th inst. Ro stroke hauling, the delegates at tho conference were in favor of the regulations governing tho kind of tackle to ho used. Tho committee recommended that a reply be sent that the society had no cause to alter then- present regulations, but that they would he pleased to have North Canterbury s regulations endorsed on their licenses, in addition to the present regulations, so that the anglers hero would not transgress their rules. It was recommended that the following bo tho regulations for fishing in Sullivan's dam this sea son: -Permit cards to be obtained from the City Corporation or their consent endorsed upon fishing licenses. Artificial fly oi artificial minnow only to he used. Worms or other live or dead bait prohibited. Tho hours of fishing to be 6 a.m. to 9.50 p.m. The number, weight, and particulars of fish caught to. bo reported to the caretaker by anglers before leaving, or, in tlie absence of the caretaker, to lie supplied to the secretary of tho moiety tho following day. This information is required for purposes of observation for restocking the water. —The report was adopted. The Chairman said that they must all bo gratified at the- decision of tho Minister of Internal Affairs iu closing down tho Southland Society’s request for an alteration in tho boundaries. Ho had arrived at a very just decision. Mr G. AY. MTntosh was appointed^to attend the conference of societies at Wellington. ____
