'THE GUARDIANS OF P HUMANITY'

"The Guardians of Humanity' was the subject of the fourth and final address delivered by Mr J. R. Thomson at the Theosophical HaU, Bowling street, last night. Mir Thomson stated that one of the chief objects of the Tbeosophical Society was the restatement of the great truth that the evolution of the world was guided by a great hierarchy of perfected men who were the custodians of the- divine wisdom. Religions waxed and waned, and as a re&igian declined in power it lost sight of the message which, it was originally intended to give to humanity. Aocretiona deleterious to human progress grew -ap around it, and then there came necessity for a restatement. Professor Tyndall had declared that he saw no x-ieason for a God, because the (laws of Nature worked ad splendidly) but this was because those laws were the expression of the Divine Will in Nature. The government of tlio world was not haphazard, with no definite scheme behind it, but was in the hands of superhuman men who had climbed the ladder of evolution to the point at which tbey were fib to be trusted with the work of guiding evolution. The churches had forgotten the fact of the living Christ and the groat ministers who surrounded Him. The great oq>han humanity had lost the senee of the fatherhood of God, and, consequently, of the brotherhood of man. Yetthere was a scheme of evolution in which everyone had his part, and in which all wore marching to a splendor and giory without Hmit. We should 'hold up our heads with dignity and self-ieepect to a benevolent Deity before whom there was no need for grovelling. The human pilgrimage from the animal world, through manhood, to divinity had been compared to climbing a mountain. The far-sighted and energetio individual climbed straight ahead j while the average man climbed slowly round and round the mountain on a spiral path, loitering by the way. All would roach the mountain top at last. Few climbed by the steep and precipitous path, and many were the slips and falls by tlio way ; but those who were sueeossr ful helped and encouraged the rest. The foremost climbers were the great hierarchy of perfected men, who guide the footsteps of humanity, the heart, of this great company being' the Christ. Hirtwelf. This lower life of ours was intended to develop certain aspects of our nature, and fit us for work in the ranks of the hierarchy. The masters of the Wisdom lived in the world in sequestered spots; but linked together in a great spiritual brotherhood. There was the department of power guiding the physical evolution of the globe; the teaching or wisdom department headed by the great teach.tr whom men called the Christ; and the administrative department, or serving ray. to which were attracted all those with power for human service, no matter of what kind. At th© head 1 of each department was & great, perfected man., and over all the King of the World. Always preceding the formation of a new race a great spirtual wave swept over the world. Such a period was at hand to-day. The egos of those now dyiug upon the battlefields of Europe would lead the- new race and the coming civilisation s and the birth of the new race would probably be accompanied' by the advent of a world teacher, those who had prepared themselves for His coming by devoting themselves to the service of humanity being welcomed as His disciples.
