Cr Bradley said, so far as he wns concerned, he did not ivish to force tho hands of the military authorities. His own experiences and tho instances of military methods in respect to death, penalties, illegal court- martials. and other happenings in the British Empire, shmved that the hands of the military cotild not be forced, even in tho interests of_ justice. Ho hid made it <'lear at the previous meeting that, •even if tho pas?es were issved, ho personally would not _ imo 1 one. To his mind, militarism in this country were becoming as had a« that which we lvoi'o figktCr Sincock said it v.vxs satisfactbry to know that, the position had been defined. There would be no need for any difference of opinion between the council and tho military La future.

His Worship expressed the -hope that the : unfortunate occurrence would not prevent; any councillor attending at the Railway | Station to do honor to the lad.s who were' being sent away. Tho controversy had nothing to do with the men who were' goine; to comp, and he trusted that, for the . sake of those men and their relatives, councillors would continue to attend the i send-off ceremonies. Tho letter was received. j CAVERSHAM QUARRY. | Tire Works Committee -eportad harms; ' received an offer from Messrs C, and W. j Shiel for a three yeara' lease.of the old

Caversham quut ry reserve la Korhury road for the. purpose of quarrying tin: remainder of tho stone therefrom, for a cash payment of £IOO for iho wb.de term. After careful inquiry, the committee were satisfied that the offer was :i reasonable one, ami it was therefore leoommended that- the same bo accepted on cendiiion that the applicants undertake to leave approximately 20ft of solid ground at the top of tho face, and leave the floor of 111e quarry so graded that it would not ;■>•>

cumulate water. Mr T. Bo:;g wrote that the owners of the Anderson Ikiy Quarry Syndicate had requested him. to draw the attention of the council to the fact that an offer lately made by Messrs 0. and YV. Sbicl to lease the old coporaiion quarry on the Forbnry road was considered by a. ppeci..;! meeting of the Works Committee, and luid been recommended for the acceptance of the council, whilst the offer of tho owners of the Anderson May quarry

was still hold over pending the receipt of a report from the Town Clerk and the City Engineer. As the two properties practically involved the same question, that was to say. '-be supply of metal to the son thorn end of the City, the owners of the Anderson 13av quarrv suggested that it would only* bo fair that consideration of the cfiVr of Messrs 0. and W. Shifl should be postponed until the report of the proposals in regard to their quarry was also before the council. If their proposal to work the Anderson Bay quarry on behalf of the City Corporation wits accepted they would be prepared to make a better offer for the' Cavershain quar-ry than the offer now placed before the council.

Cr Wilson moved the adoption of the report. Cr ibvward moved as an amendment that tiie' mailer he referred back to the committee with instructions to call tenders for the right to quarry the laud. Cr Lunn seconded, and said it should be tendered for as, a matter of principle. Tho amendment was-lost and Cue report adopted. ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE.
