BOWLING

[By Mbasttber.] North-east Valley Club's report is not able to slate an improved condition us regards membership. This is surprising. The club have one of the best (some say it is the best) greens in town, and the present members are a lot of good spores. Their dav must come, and with a populous neighborhood it would be no surprise to seo 100 members mi the roll instead of halt that number. The club's fulfilment of engagements for nine rinks with only practically 39 members to choose from does them' credit, and the fact that they were not high up on the banner list need not disturb them. At Caledonian Club's annual meeting Mr V. Cavanagh brought forward the matter of clubs' "representation on the Centre Executive. Under the present constitution the total strength of the executive is 11, and, as there are 21 clubs affiliated, necessarily a number have no delegate acting. Mr "Cavanagh proposes that every club shall have one delegato on the executive, and is of opinion that the number would not prove unwieldy. A point to be considered in this connection is that, with an arbitrary restriction to one member only froiii a club. men may be es:luded, as it is quite possible for two or aven more born legislators to be members sf one club. However, discussion on the constitution of tho executive can do no barm, as there is room for improvement. Dimedm Club's billiard table earned £99 12s during the season, leaving a profit of £64 odd after all expenses were met. St. Clair Club's report is satisfactory Inasmuch as it records steady progress in the increase in membership. The increase, m-r last season was six active and seven honorary members.

At Kaituna Club's annual meeting a gentleman referred to a remark made by a previous speaker to the effect that some pe-jple thought it was hardly fitting that bowlers should continue the game at the present time. Speaking ;is one who had suffered heavily by the war (he hud lost two sons at the front), this gentleman said that he found great consolation in journeying to the green and playing a quiet friendly game with kindly fellow-creatures, and he could see no possible harm in doing so.

At the same meeting a, pood deal of time was devoted to discussing the different schemes or interclub play, and the idea suggested in this column found a lot of favor. One speaker, while supporting it generally. said that the clause prohibiting a player, after taking part in one section, from 'doine; duty for another section might be inconvenient'to clubs with limited mcmbeislnp, and the necessity of entering four rinks would be hard on some club?. Fairfield Club, with a total membership of 13, 1 was instanced. Fair enough criticism ! As regards the first objection, it does not seem to me serious. The "stiffening" of : teams must be prevented, and most clubs who enter allow a fair margin of players on the bank,./many of whom ore perhaps hurt at being omitted from the chosen ones. Their chances of a gamo would be increased. As to Fairiield Club, the position is unique, and "a very slight concession would. 1 am sure, be willingly made to meet the ease of such good sports, the concession to take the shape of allowing them (as in previous seasons) to enter three rinks. From expressions of opinion so far gleaned at club meetings, it seems as though the. Centre Incentive's recommeii- | nation that rinks only be played at the ! Easter tournament will receive very gen--1 eral support. Caversham Club are the I last to agree with this. 1 A special meeting of delegates is called n 7 c\t 'old ti aa< pt Vl muni te i pou md bil ict ">httt oi tht ( eiit e to n m " itf *r lpj! t -. t i too council at the I a-- cntio i id ti consider eat n p o |ji pd i l * i ' -> ' ot trie Cuttie I P.v the death of Mr C.
