Speaking at a Chamber of Commerce dinner at Hamilton, Mr Hammond (president of the Waikato Farmers' Union) said, r;i a practical farmer, he considered that • the soldier settlers at Te Miro we-e go : n ' to have a bad time this ye;ir. Those who took the men lucre should have kiw.. a better. Thev could not buy cows until late in the season, so they thus had a short season for returns. The roads were in a very bad state, and the country -was almost without feed, and in danger of being eaten out by rabbits.
