AMERICAN FREIGHT. Messrs Arkell mid Douglas, in their NewYork circular of -May 4, statethat on that dat-e there was no prospect of any fui'thc steamers loading for Australia or New Zea land. Efforts were being made to arrange with the authorities to assign -a. taller t'oi New Zealand, but this va* cxceedingl diflicult, owing to no desirable return cargo (except some hides and wool) being av.ui able Sailers were loading, and would doubtless continue to load regularly tor Australia, owing to the necessity of these vessels returning with wheat. COPPER OUTPUT. -Ydviccs from the United States regardin"' the outlook for copper are to the effect that some of the loading American authorities consider that the mines will not be able to restore the output of the metal to its former dimensions for some little time to come, and that, consequently, the price of the metal is not likely to show much variation. It is mentioned thajt the bulk of the increasing supplies accruing at the copper refineries are being requisitioned for munition purposes by the United States on behalf of themselves and the allied Governments. Still, with larger quantities of the metal forthcoming, it would appear inevitable that industrial requirements will now be better met than has been possible for some months past. Private buying is restricted to immediate wants because of tho price that has to be paid.
