A GENERAL RATE OF Is 6d. HALF-PENNY INCREASE. Tho Finance Committee of the City Council met the other members of the council to consider the question of the finances for the year. It is understood that it will bo recommended to the council to-nig'ht that a special rats of 41,5, to cover tho charitable aid rate, be struck, and that the general rate be fixed at Is sd. This means an increase in the rates of in the £!. iWe understand that tho profits of tho city trading departments will not be as large this year as in previous years. Although tho income is well up to the usual, the enormous increased cost of material Iras prevented the usual profits being made. The only exception is the tramways department, which has maintained its position.
