MOTOR ACCIDENTS

• INSURANCE MANAGERS INJURE]). A serious motor car accident occurred near Walkoraiti yesterday afternoon, in ■which '\lr J. B. Grave, Dunedin, manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, and Mr G. F. Wheatley, manager of the Dunedin branch of the Liverpool, London, and Globe Insurance Company, were injured, the former seriously, Mr Grave and Mr Wheatley left the City at noon yesterday in Mr Grave’s twoseater Ford car, with the object of visiting the agents in Central Otago. Near the junction of the Ivaritane and Main North roads a resident (Mr M'Voan) saw the car turn a somersault and collapse on its side. He ran to the spot, and found both men unconscious, Mr Drive lying with hj» head under the engine, and Mr Wheatley under the -side of the car. It was a difficult task to extricate, them, but Mr M'Voan succeeded, and the injured men were conveyed to the Golden Fleece Private Hotel, Waikouaiti, by Mr 15title, of Cherry Farm. There the services of Dr Howden wore obtained. Mr Grave is badly injured about the head, awl suffers also from a dislocated shoulder. He -remained unconscious during the night, but regained consciousness for a few minutes thin morning ; and his condition, though serious, is not hopeless. Mr Wheatley was severely cub about the left temple, the injui'v necessitating many stitches, and ho also sustained slight concussion • hut he was able to return to his home in Hunt street, Anderson Day, by the taod-cab which took Mr Grave’s family to Waikouaiti last evening. Mr Grave lives in York place, and has a family of three daughters, the eldest 19 years of ago. Ho lived in Oamarn prior to his present appointment. SMASH IN PRINCES STREET SOUTH. At about 6 o'clock last evening a taxicab, driven by Walter Brook;;, apparently became uncontrollable when the driver was negotiating the corner of Princes street south and King Edward street, at the Kensington and ran no the steep grass bank at the left-hand side of the road. The passengers (a dairv farmer named Richard Decide and a 'returned soldier named Bennett) were spilled out with the driver, and Decide received injuries which, though not considered very serious, necessitated his removal to tno Hospital. Three of the wheels of the car were smashed of?, and the vehicle is badly damaged.
