OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board, begun this morning, was attended by Messrs Fleming (chairman) M'Kinlay, Wilkinson, Todd, Wallace Horn, Smith, Livingstone, Brugh, and Borrio. . —Architect's Recommendations.— The architect's recommendations in respect to the following work were approved : r Mosgiel : Erection of new latrines for infants. Estimated cost £250. Owaka Valley: Repairs to buildings etc. Cost about £ls. Macandrew Road : Alterations to ventilation and lighting; also providing of certain new furniture. Estimated cost £67 Balclutha : Repairs, etc., to teacher's residence. Estimated cost £75. Green Island : Improving of ventilation and repairs to fence. Estimated cost £37 10s. Kakapuaka : Grants of £3 towards co<t of repairs to fences and £2 towards cost of asphalting. Owaka : Grant of half cost 4 (£10 4s £k!) of improvements, fences, swings, etc. Kakanui: Grant up to £7 for asphalting granted, but application for renovation of room declined. —Deputations.— The Hampden School Committee wrote protesting against the proposed removal of unused room to Kartigi.—Tho load Borough Council also forwarded a resolution protesting against the removal of the room.—-A deputation from the School Committee waited upon the board.— Mr Muxcott (chairman of the School Committee) said that the attendance -svas quits likely to increase, in which event iha extra room would be required. Its removal would also mean extensive alteratons to the water supply. Mr MurcoU contended further that the attendance at Kartigi did not warrant the extra accommodation.—Mr . M'William support «d these contentions, and suggested that arrangements be made to enable the Kartigi children to attend the Hampden School.—The Chairman (Mr Fleming) pointed out that the Toom had only been, used for two months in the past 14 years. —Mr M'William Teplied that the attendance had to increase only by a very little to entitle the school to another teacher, and in this case the room would be required.—The board decided to defer further discussion until to-morrow's sitting, Mr Borrie giving notice of motion that the resolution previously passed on the matter be rescinded. A deputation representing the settlers at Jahakopa waited upon the board to protest against the proposed removal of the school from its present site to one nearer the railway station.—Messrs Martin and M'Lennan formed the deputation, and expressed their opinon that the school was sufficiently, central where it is, and that there was no advantage to be gained educationally by removing it. Thev extended an invitation to members of the board to visit the district and see the position for themselves.—Consideration of this matter also was deferred until to-morrow's sitting. —General.— committee in charge of the Y.M.C.A. Red Triangle appeal wrote asking the board's pel-mission to distribute collection lists through tfio various schools in order to give an opportunity of contributing.—Granted. The Education Department intimated that the-' capitation would be increased from 6d to 9d on the usual average attendance, on condition that the boaixf's niles provide for at least one month's sick leave on full pay, followed by one month's half pay in the case of all teachers who have boon in the education service for five years or more.—Referred .to Chairman and Secretary to draw up necessary provision. The head masters of Arthur Street Xorth-East Valley, and St. Clair Schools asked permission to use the Pacific Geographies, the Senior Inspector havinorecommended that that book be used where the teacher desired a text book.— Referred to the Books Committee of the board.
