The Westknd Chamber of Commerce had under consideration last night the direction issued 'by the Government to Commissioners of Lands and wardens advising thorn, when granting timber-cutting leases or licenses, to imiko the stipulation that no white pine timber shall bo exported from the Dominion, but that it shall be •reserved for the purposes of the New Zealand dairying industry exclusively. Strong exception was taken to the course pro" posed. It was stated tlhafc the prohibition was being irregularly enforced, and was contrary to recommendations of the Forestry Commission and the evidence tendered by tho Board of Trade on the subject. It was resolved to ask 'the Government to withdraw the instructions to their officers, and a sub-committee was set up to prepare reasons in support of this request. It was also decided to ask other chambers to cooperate, pointing out that great waste as well as increased cost would, result, and under stringent regulations' timber would not 'be available for fruitgrowers.
