ST. KILDA COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the S£. Kilda Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr C. N. Scurr) and Crs. J. "Dove, J. Ritchie-, O. Densem, R. W. Hall, H. W. Allen, H. Smeaton, 11. Telfer, A. Edgar, A. Kilpatrick, and A. Campbell. A letter was received from the Manawatu County Council in reference to the Railway Department refusing to run special trains in connection, with race meetings. Tt was pointed -out in the resolution passed by the Manawatu Council that a large amount of extra motor traffic is nowthrown upon the roads, and that the cost of repairing the extra damage done by this motor traffic is much greater to the country than the cost of running special trains to local race meetings, and, further, that it was estimated that the extra cost of repairing damage done to the roads in the Manawatu county through races amounted to at least £I,OOO per annum. The Manawatu Council asked for the support of the resolution, and that the member for the district be written to asking him to support the resumption of race specials, so that local bodies will not be penalised by the policy of the Railway Department.—The letter was received without any discussion. The Works, Water, and Lighting Committee reported that it had been decided to call for fresh tenders for painting the Toof only of the council's cottage, as it was not considered that the other part of the cottage required painting at present. The Town Clerk will have the power to accept the lowest tender. The committee also reported that the Town Clerk had been instructed to see the tramway traffic manager with reference to having the used tram tickets and waste papers at present swept on to the streets at both termini collected, and that a dust bin be provided for the same, the council to remove the contents. —The report was adopted.
